Mothership - an experiment in portable public sculpture

Artscape / Baltimore - Summer 2005

Little Cakes was asked to curate a show for the Artscape festival. The criteria was that the pieces had to be portable; installed within 15 minutes, light enough to be carried by 2 people, and able to fit in the back of a pick up truck. 20 pieces were selected from open entry submissions.

The pieces were shown as a group on a grassy median on Mount Royal Avenue, right in front of MICA, before and during the festival. None were vandalized but a few were stolen (a form of flattery no doubt) and two stow away art works appeared on site.

After the festival, the remaining works were dispersed through out the city. Some remain there till they disintegrate or disappear.

Little Cakes would like to thank Gary Kachadourian and Michael Benevento for all of their help and Twig Harper and Carly Ptak for their hospitality.
