GUILLERMINA BAIGUERA AND JULIAN GATTO TAZA TAZA
Little Cakes Little Gallery
625 East Sixth Street, Apartment 1B, East Village
Through Oct. 7

"Little Cakes used to operate out of the tiny East Village apartment occupied by the gallery's founders, Hanna Fushihara Aron and David Aron, and their several pets. And maybe because shows tended to demand dramatic interior alteration, they were sporadic. The gallery recently reopened at a new location. Space is still tight, but living and work quarters are discrete, and the exhibition schedule has stabilized.

That the gallery hasn't increased in size is important to its craft-based, private-feeling, nostalgic-utopian aesthetic. Guillermina Baiguera and Julian Gatto exemplify it. Based in Buenos Aires, they sometimes collaborate, but mostly do separate but related work. Mr. Gatto is showing several watercolor drawings of semi-abstract, leaflike forms, as well as biomorphic embroideries. Ms. Baiguera has expert floral drawings in pencil and a variety of embroideries, minutely detailed and painting-like.

Much of their work is inspired by, and plays off, everyday objects - china cups, ice cream molds, glass lampshades - salvaged from attics and rummage sales. Many such items are on display in the gallery, and at first glance it's almost impossible to distinguish them from the art. Everything, old and new, seems intimately connected in this sweet-spirited show in one of the city's more distinctive galleries." HOLLAND COTTER
